| Where do hurricanes form? They form over the ocean, near the equator, where the temperature of the sea and the air above it is warm enough. Why don't they form at the level of the equator? Because they need the Coriolis effect to rotate, the same way as the water goes down a drain differently in different hemisphere's. The Hurricanes also spin in different directions in the North and south hemisphere's, they also travel in different directions: Northern hurricanes travel west and southern ones travel east, as a rule... Where do they get their strength from? Hurricanes get their strength from the water, this is why they weaken when the travel over land Why have they been more devastating in the recent years? Scientist's believe that hurricanes are getting stronger due to global warming that is making sea temperatures higher. More hurricane information in English and Spanish |
